Russia Claims Involvement in Repelling Niger's Coup Attempt

Niamey, Niger – Russia has publicly acknowledged its role in repelling a coup attempt in Niger, which took place on Saturday morning. The capital city, Niamey, was rocked by explosions and gunfire, particularly at a key military airbase and the presidential palace. However, Niger's authorities confirmed later in the day that the rebellion had been contained.

The Nigerien foreign ministry, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that the attack was repelled with the assistance of Russian forces. Specifically, the ministry cited the involvement of "servicemen of the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defence." The situation is now under control, according to the statement, with President [Gen Abdourahmane] Tiani's legitimate authorities at the helm.

Russia's African Corps has emerged as a crucial security partner for several military governments in the Sahel region, which has been grappling with long-running jihadist insurgencies. The recent coup attempt in Niger, a country that has recently shifted its alliances away from Western partners and towards Russia, serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in the region.

The Alliance of Sahel States, a regional organization comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, described the attempted coup as "a betrayal by a group of soldiers involved in an attempt at destabilization." The authorities have yet to disclose the number of soldiers involved in the coup or the extent of the casualties.

General Tiani, Niger's military ruler, who took power following a coup in 2020, has not publicly addressed the incident. The nation's state broadcaster aired footage showing several alleged mutineers being apprehended by the Presidential Guard. On Sunday, the Niger Press Agency reported that commercial activity was gradually returning to normal, with petrol stations, shops, and other businesses reopening.

Supporters of the government gathered in a public square in central Niamey to express their support for the security forces and Tiani's government. The airbase at the center of the Saturday attack, Air Base 101, is part of the Diori Hamani airport complex and hosts Nigerien military aircraft, drones, and an Alliance of Sahel States counter-terrorism unit. Russian and Italian forces are also stationed there, according to Reuters.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, all currently under military rule, have severed ties with Western partners and deepened their cooperation with Russia. However, jihadist violence persists across all three countries, despite the shift in alliances. The recent mutiny underscores the multifaceted nature of the security challenges facing Niger's military, which must contend with both external insurgencies and internal discontent.

The airbase targeted on Saturday had already been attacked twice this year, once by an Islamic State affiliate and later by an al-Qaeda affiliate. Nigerien authorities have increased patrols around key sites in Niamey in the wake of the attempted coup, including the main airport entrance and the presidential pavilion.

The incident has sparked international concern, with neighboring countries and Western powers likely monitoring the situation closely. The US has previously expressed interest in engaging with the military governments in the Sahel region, including Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

As Niger continues to grapple with its internal security challenges, the role of external actors, particularly Russia, will likely remain a point of contention. The recent coup attempt has once again highlighted the complex dynamics at play in the Sahel region and the challenges faced by its military governments in maintaining stability and security.
