A catastrophic accident off the coast of northern Cyprus has resulted in at least eight confirmed fatalities and the disappearance of over a dozen individuals, according to the Turkish administration in the region. The incident occurred when a passenger ferry, carrying 259 people, capsized after departing from the coastal town of Kyrenia.
The prime minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Cyprus, Ünal Üstel, revealed that the vessel had begun taking on water following a series of severe waves. The privately-owned ferry, which was scheduled to travel to Turkey, had been delayed due to adverse weather conditions. However, the combination of a delayed departure and the unexpected impact of the waves led to the tragic capsizing.
In the aftermath of the incident, the ship's captain and seven crew members have been detained for an investigation into the cause of the disaster. Üstel emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the primary focus is on rescuing the passengers still unaccounted for. Turkish authorities have joined the search and rescue operation, deploying helicopters and coastguard boats to the scene.
The privately-owned ferry, a high-speed Filo Jet vessel, was sailing under the flag of Turkey. The company that operates the boat, Filo Denizcilik, expressed deep sadness over the tragic accident. A hotline has been established to provide information to the relatives of the passengers aboard the ferry.
Images from the scene have shown rescue boats and a helicopter working tirelessly to save those in the water, with several people wearing life jackets visible on the upside-down ferry hull. Üstel confirmed that the ferry had completely sunk, and the transport minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Erhan Arikli, reported that 100 passengers had been taken to shore.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent his condolences to the Turkish Cypriots and assured that efforts to locate those still missing would continue uninterrupted. Erdogan highlighted the collaborative search-and-rescue operations that had been initiated immediately following the accident.
The TRNC, which is recognized only by Turkey, controls the northern third of the island of Cyprus, a region that has been divided since 1974. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the region, particularly in terms of safety and maritime operations.
As the search and rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on the recovery of the missing passengers and the provision of medical care to those injured. Üstel vowed that the disaster would be thoroughly investigated, and that any form of negligence would be uncovered and addressed.
The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern from both the local and international communities. As more information becomes available, the full impact of the tragedy will become clearer, and the necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
