Singapore High Court Dismisses Executive's Bid to Reclaim $369,000 in Gifts from Ex-Partner

A Singapore High Court judge has formally dismissed a civil lawsuit brought by a corporate executive who sought to compel his former partner to return hundreds of thousands of dollars spent during their romantic relationship. The court established that the substantial sums expended were voluntary gifts rather than legally enforceable loans.

The legal action was initiated by Chander Agarwal, the chief executive officer of a logistics enterprise, against his former girlfriend, Felicia Lee. In his claim, Agarwal attempted to recover S$468,000 (approximately $369,000), arguing that the expenditures constituted financial assistance that ought to be repaid following the dissolution of their partnership.

Senior Judge Lee Seiu Kin ruled firmly against the claimant, concluding that the funds provided to Lee throughout their courtship were disbursed willingly. The court determined that Agarwal had established a consistent habit of showering Lee with lavish presents and financial support, routinely reassuring her that he had no expectation of ever receiving reimbursement.

According to court proceedings, the pair initially encountered each other during a flight in 2019, when Lee was employed as a flight attendant. Their acquaintance eventually evolved into an intimate romantic relationship that formally spanned from September 2022 through December 2023, during which Agarwal routinely covered substantial living and luxury expenses.

The relationship experienced an acrimonious collapse toward the close of 2023 after Agarwal came to suspect that Lee was engaged in an extramarital or outside affair. Following the contentious separation, the logistics executive escalated the personal dispute to the legal arena by filing his civil claim in March 2024.

In his legal filings, Agarwal characterized the financial outlays as a series of interest-free loans that Lee had allegedly solicited from him across the span of their time together. He contended that these transactions were entered into under the understanding that the financial value would ultimately be returned.

The claimant provided an itemized breakdown of the funds he sought to claw back, which included S$206,000 racked up in credit card expenditures and S$129,000 allocated toward luxury international holidays. Additional claims included S$17,000 disbursed to secure the professional services of a fengshui master for Lee’s residence, alongside S$20,000 transferred to service her personal life insurance premiums.

Lee vigorously contested the lawsuit, maintaining throughout the proceedings that every single disputed item and payment had been bestowed upon her as an unconditional gift grounded in mutual love, care, and affection, rather than any commercial or personal debt obligation.

In evaluating the conflicting accounts, Senior Judge Lee identified a fatal absence of documentary substantiation on the part of the claimant. The court observed that Agarwal could not tender any written proof, contemporary records, or formal acknowledgments showing that Lee had ever recognized the funds as debts or agreed to repayment terms.

The judge observed that the evidentiary record plainly illustrated a man thoroughly captivated by the defendant, who willingly expended large sums on expensive offerings. The court found that Agarwal had begun providing generous items even prior to the formal start of their romantic involvement, consistently undermining any notion of a commercial loan arrangement.

The ruling also underscored the noticeable disparity in economic circumstances between the two parties. Senior Judge Lee described Agarwal as an individual of ample personal wealth and distinctly expensive taste, contrasting his affluent background with Lee’s comparatively modest financial standing.

Contemporary text communications presented during the trial further corroborated Lee's position, revealing instances where she expressed genuine astonishment at Agarwal’s costly proposals. On several occasions documented in the message logs, Lee demonstrated spontaneous reluctance to accept such extravagant gestures before being persuaded by Agarwal.

The court delivered a scathing assessment of the claimant’s motivations in pursuing the litigation, stating that Agarwal had grown embittered once the partnership ended poorly. The judge concluded that the executive had become fixated on using the legal system to extract a financial penalty from his former companion purely out of resentment.

To contextualize the emotional dynamics underlying the case, Senior Judge Lee referenced seventeenth-century English playwright William Congreve’s classical tragedy "The Mourning Bride," which famously observed that heaven possesses no rage like love turned to hatred, nor hell a fury comparable to a woman scorned.

The presiding judge noted that the bitter litigation demonstrated that such vindictive reactions and profound post-breakup hostility are by no means the exclusive domain of any single gender, noting how personal animosity can drive prolonged court battles.

The dispute carries similarities to another prominent legal conflict heard in Singapore in early 2023, in which a man named K Kawshigan launched twin lawsuits exceeding S$3 million against a woman named Nora Tan after she rejected his romantic advances. Kawshigan had claimed that her rejection caused him reputational damage and severe emotional trauma.

In that earlier matter, the Singapore courts decisively struck out Kawshigan’s claims as an abuse of process, after which Tan initiated counter-proceedings to recover the legal costs she had been forced to incur while defending herself against his persistent actions and alleged harassment.
