South Africa Reels as Bodies of 12 Women Are Found in Two Months East of Johannesburg

Police in South Africa have confirmed the discovery of three more female bodies in Ekurhuleni, the metropolitan region east of Johannesburg, bringing the total number of women found dead there since July to 12. The latest remains were recovered between Saturday and Monday morning, according to local law enforcement, deepening alarm across a string of communities already shaken by the steady drumbeat of grim news.

The discoveries stretch from mid-July to late September and have clustered in and around Kempton Park, a busy area close to OR Tambo International Airport, as well as in Springs, Boksburg, Tembisa and Olifantsfontein. While investigators have made arrests in three of the cases, they have said those incidents do not appear to be connected to one another. Crucially, police have not ruled out the possibility that a serial killer could be at work, a prospect that has fuelled public anxiety and demands for a more coordinated response.

The first victim identified was Busisiwe Mahlangu, a 37-year-old whose body was found in Kempton Park on 15 July. She was discovered naked with her hands bound by cable ties, according to police. A suspect believed to be her partner was arrested two days later and has remained in custody. Authorities have not linked him to any of the later deaths, indicating that at least part of this string of killings may stem from domestic violence rather than a single predator.

The second woman, 32-year-old Itumeleng Kekana, was found in the same area on 3 August. The young mother had disappeared in July, and her body was located on a bridge, badly bruised and partially clothed. No one has been arrested in connection with her death, leaving her family without answers as weeks pass.

On 26 August, the body of Nomfesane Mjobo was recovered, again in Kempton Park. Police have released few details about the circumstances of her death, but like most of the victims, she was found partially or fully naked and bearing bruises. No arrests have been made.

Less than two weeks later, on 7 September, officers confirmed the discovery of an unidentified woman in her 20s floating in a river in Olifantsfontein. She was wearing only her underwear. Police have shared no further information about her death, and no suspect has been taken into custody.

The fifth victim, Gracious Nkomo, was found on 10 September along a road close to South Africa's busiest airport. The 28-year-old's body was partially clothed. Her death, like several others, remains unsolved.

Public attention intensified sharply after the discovery of Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, a 38-year-old avid runner who went missing while on a daily run near her home in Kempton Park. Her body was found badly bruised and partially clothed on 12 September following a highly publicised nationwide search. It was the discovery of her remains that appeared to fully awaken the country to the scale of the crisis, prompting memorial runs and renewed calls for action. No arrests have been made in her case.

Just two days later, on 14 September, police confirmed another body had been found in Olifantsfontein. The woman's name has been withheld because her family had not yet been notified. No arrests have been made.

On 15 September, the body of 38-year-old Dineo Motapane was discovered in Springs, only two days after she was last seen alive. Her battered and partly burned remains were found on the side of a road. She leaves behind a young child. No arrests have been made in her case.

Two days after that, on 17 September, the body of Jabulile Ntimba, a woman in her 30s, was found half-naked and wrapped in a sheet beside a road in Boksburg. This was the ninth body recovered in Ekurhuleni. Police believe she may have been killed in a possible love triangle. Three people — two women and a man — were initially arrested, but the man was released due to insufficient evidence. The two women have been charged with premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice, a charge that suggests an alleged attempt to obstruct the investigation.

The 10th victim, Ntombifuthi Nxumalo, was found at a cemetery in the Tembisa neighbourhood on 26 September. She was naked and had sustained serious head injuries, with stones lying near her body. Police suspect she may have been stoned to death. A 36-year-old man was arrested a day later after travelling to another province, and he faces a murder charge.

The 11th body, that of a woman who has not yet been identified, was found in Springs on Sunday, according to police. The 12th discovery followed, with three more bodies confirmed between Saturday and Monday morning, completing a toll that has left Ekurhuleni residents fearful and angry.

The killings have unfolded against a backdrop of longstanding concern about South Africa's high rates of violence against women, a problem activists have long described as a national crisis. The sheer concentration of cases in one region over a single two-month period has amplified those concerns, raising difficult questions about policing, community safety and the protection of women in a country where gender-based violence remains pervasive. The fact that most victims were found partially or fully undressed, and often with bruises, has only deepened suspicions that a pattern of violent predation may be at play — even as investigators caution that the cases differ in important respects.

The arrests in three cases offer some measure of accountability, but the majority of the deaths remain unsolved. For families in Kempton Park, Springs, Boksburg and Tembisa, the wait for justice continues, while police face mounting pressure to determine whether the tragedies are the work of separate offenders or something more systematic and terrifying.
